Higher education and civic responsibility go hand-in-hand. ISU utilizes the bright minds of our faculty and students to develop solutions, and to leverage our 150+ years of experience and history to insure a sustainable future. Here are just a few of the ways that we have transformed our campus and programs:
Innovation Consulting Community Powered by ISU Students. The ISU Innovation Consulting Community provides students with a transformational learning experience guided by project mentors with the opportunity to further develop a creative mindset to propose solutions to complex problems and innovation in strategy. Solutions are provided to the for profit and not-for-profit sectors. This program, launched in 2016, has provided nearly 30 clients with innovative solutions.
Water Conservation in Chemistry Laboratories. Two water conservation initiatives, implemented by two partners (Chemistry & Sustainability), has resulted in a reduction in water loss by over 250,000/gallons/year. Water leaks in the 34 laboratories were causing a loss of over 86,000/gallons of treated water each year, Sustainability interns implemented a preventive maintenance program and acquired funding to repair all of the leaks. A major water saver has been the addition of vacuum pumps to replace the venturi style vacuum previously used to dry materials in the labs.
Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. Over the course of 8 years and the contributions of numerous students, faculty and staff, ISU's D.A. Weibring golf course achieved this prestigious designation in March 2018. Golf Course Superintendent Travis Williams continues to make improvements to the course and its operation through use of technology such as GPS applicators and GIS tree inventories.
