Promoting a healthy, safe, and environmentally sustainable campus is a central goal of the Illinois State University Educating Illinois, the 2008-2014 strategic plan.

The Business Case to create an office dedicated to Sustainability at ISU was presented to the administration in early 2010 and enacted July 1 that same year.
