Snake Plant
Dracaena trifasciata
Commonly called snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue this plant is native to tropical western Africa. It is a stemless evergreen perennial that, with proper care, will last for many years. In its native habitat, plant foliage may rise to as much as 4’ tall, but is often smaller (to 2’ tall) on indoor plants. Erect, fleshy, sharply-pointed, sword-shaped leaves are deep green with light gray-green horizontal stripes. Leaves rise stiffly in a rosette from a thick rhizome. Small, fragrant, greenish-white flowers bloom on mature plants in spring, followed by orange berries. Flowers and fruit rarely appear on indoor plants. It is a good low-maintenance indoor plant. -
Lucky Bamboo
Dracaena sanderiana
Dracaena sanderiana, commonly called lucky bamboo, is a small to medium sized, slow-growing, herbaceous perennial native to tropical western Africa. Mature plants will reach up to 5' tall with an equal spread. The slim, upright stems have distinct nodes giving them a bamboo-like appearance. The foliage is solid green but varieties are available that feature variegated foliage with stripes of white to yellow. This plant is often grown as a houseplant, either in water or in soil. The stems can be trained to take on a number of forms including spirals, braids, hearts, and loops. It is generally a very easy indoor plant to care for. -
ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia
Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly called ZZ plant or aroid palm, is an aroid family member that is native to dry grassland and forest in Eastern Africa. It is a stemless evergreen plant that typically grows to 3’ tall with attractive, pinnately compound leaves rising up from its rhizomes. Each leaf has 6-8 pairs of elliptic, glossy green leaflets (to 6” long). Flowers appear on mature plants. Flower structure consists of a spadix (erect spike of numerous tiny creamy white flowers) encased by a sheath-like green spathe. It is a low-maintenance indoor plant. -
Pothos (devil’s ivy)
Epipremnum aureum
Epipremnum aureum, commonly called golden pothos or devil’s ivy, is native to the Solomon Islands. It is a climbing vine that produces abundant yellow-marbled foliage. Young plants feature bright, waxy, heart-shaped green leaves (to 4” long) that are variegated with yellow or white. It is a low-maintenance indoor plant. -
Spider Plant
Chlorophytum comosum
Chlorophytum comosum is native to South Africa. It has linear leaves that are green or striped white. Flowering stems bear loose panicles of small, white, starry flowers. Plantlets are formed at the flowering nodes. When plants are full, they have an interesting, graceful, cascading habit. It is a low-maintenance indoor plant. -
Peace Lily
Spathiphyllum
Spathiphyllum is a genus of around 50 species of clumping, evergreen perennials native to the forest floors of tropical Central America and Southeast Asia. The typical aroid-type inflorescences are made up of a leaf-like spathe and spike-like spadix. The leaves are dark green and glossy. Commonly called peace lilies, these plants are popular houseplants and indoor landscaping plants. They flower freely if provided the proper growing conditions. These plants do well in lower light situations but prefer bright filtered light and are low maintenance indoor plants.
